    Description

Here's a great Massive Antique Victorian Stair Case Newell Post/Baluster One Piece! Showing typical age. Vertical split. Still solid. Turned from one piece. Found at a local estate auction. No history to offer. It's walnut for sure. I'm guessing pre 1890, base on it being turned form one solid piece. There are no seems indicating pieces glued together. It's 52" high. Approximately 7 1/2" square at the flats. One picture shows a repair/insert at one of the turnings. I you look close, you'll note burl patterns in the grain. My expectation a chip got knocked off when turning and a piece was fitted by the maker. Definitely  been that way for a lot of years. Squared are on top is about 5 1/2" high at the corners. The base square is about 10" high, also at the corners. Round circle center in the vey top is likely original, to finish off the mark left form being mounted for turning. Recess for the bannister is about 3 3/4" wide by 2 1/4" high. Obvious concern would be about the split. It is a normal in 100+ year old wood as it dries out. Having experience in refinishing, I'll say it is as dry as it will ever get. I would not expect it to get worse or split entirely. In the hands of the right restoration person it can be filled and blended to look great. Ultimately it's normal character that most accept on antique wood. This is a statement piece for any home of restoration project. Restorable pieces like this are individually unique. A post his size, turned form a solid piece is a special find.
