    Description

Large, heavy stone bracelet excavated in Hombori, Mali. Laboriously hand-carved c.1890-1920 from a solid piece of granite taken from a sacred rock outcropping. Used as trade currency with the Timbuktu Caravans until Europeans erected political, ethnic borders and missionaries inflamed religious differences between tribes. These bracelets had magical powers and were banged together as noise makers during celebrations increasing social status for those who ignored risk of breakage. Also used as bracelet-fighting weapons by the Tuareg. Remember eBay collects sales tax.
